景點介紹

Professor Ku Chao Kuang was born and raised in Fengshan. He’s been studying the culture of the military village in Kaohsiung for a long time. He stated that the Huangpu Veterans Quarter is probably one of the first generation military villages in Taiwan and could have even been the first military village. The Huangpu Veterans Quarter is built in the Japanese style and well conserved. It is worth to conserve this village from the historical and architectural perspective. Huangpu Veterans Quarter is named after Huangpu and is right opposite to the Republic of China Military Academy, commonly referred to as the Whampoa Military Academy. Besides the Huangpu Veterans Quarter, Huangpu First to Seven Villages are also named after Huangpu. However, Huangpu Veterans Quarter is different from the others because of the background of the residents and the history of the building. Huangpu Veterans Quarters looks like a typical military village. However, the residents here are primarily the subordinates of General Sun Li Jen. This military village is different from the other ones due to the tragedy othat befell the General. Huangpu Veterans Quarters is in the Japanese-style. It was a dormitory built by the Japanese army for the stationed army during WWII for the Southern Expansion Doctrine. It was for military dependents instead of singles. Therefore, it was home for these dependents. However, their home became the residence of the dependents of the Chinese army, which was their enemy, after WWII. This seems ironic but it symbolizes the era and historical meaning of Huangpu.

The village is named after Huangpu because the Republic of China Military Academy was founded in Huangpu (Whampoa), Guangzhou, Guangdong. The Republic of China Military Academy is also called the Whampoa Military Academy. The history of this military academy, founded in 1924, is literally a snapshot of Chinese modern history. The world was changing rapidly from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. China at that time wasn’t able to stay out of the change of the world. Sun Yat Sen founded the Republic of China in 1911. The country was unstable and fell apart. It was split by warlords from different regions and it needed an armed forces that sticks to its own beliefs and has great quality. The Whampoa Military Academy was founded at a time like this. Throughout the Chinese history from this time on, people associated with this academy played an important role in the Northern Expedition, the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Communist Revolution. The so-called cadres of the troops directly under the command of Chiang Kai Shek during WWII must be graduates of the Whampoa Military Academy. Chou En Lai, the former Premier of China was the deputy director of the Department of Politics when the academy was founded. Five out of the so-called ten marshals of China after the founding of the People's Republic of China graduated from the Whampoa Military Academy. Whampoa is inseparable from the modern history of China and plays an indispensable role in the modern history of China.

In 1950, the Whampoa Military Academy was re-established in Fengshan, Taiwan and has been in operation since then. It continues to train army cadres of the Republic of China. Whampoa becomes a tradition and lives on. The old site of the academy in Guangzhou has becomes a monument for visitors.

Huangpu Veterans Quarters was named Chengzheng New Village in the first place. It’s the dormitory for the dependents of the subordinates of General Sun Li Jen, who was not under the direct command of Jiang Kai Shek. The name Chengzheng originated from the elementary school for the dependents of the soldiers in the troop of General Sun Li Jen during the time when General Sun Li Jen was stationed in Guizhou. Chengzheng means integrity in Chinese and distinctively depicts the personality of General Sun Li Jen. The Whampoa Military Academy was re-established next to Chengzheng New Village in 1950, which was renamed Whampoa Military Academy later on. The elementary school on the south of Huangpu Veterans Quarter is named after Chengzheng, keeping this term to date. The buildings in Huangpu Veterans Quarter were dormitories of the Japanese military dependents. The troops led by General Sun Li Jen had a fierce battle with the Japanese army in Myanmar. The soldiers of the troop have lived in the Japanese military dependents for such a long time since they retreated to Taiwan. History is always surprising. These soldiers fought the Japanese when they were young but were forced to be away from home. They lived in the former home of Japanese. Some brought their dependents but some married Taiwanese women and have been living in Taiwan for the rest of their lives. The former dormitories of the Japanese military dependents are divided into single and duplex houses. However, the space is too small. Therefore, each house is expanded and separated on the left and right. This
