The Tengjhih National Forest Recreation Area is located in Taoyuan District of Kaohsiung City. It is managed by the Management Office of Pingtung Forest District of the Forestry Bureau. Tengjhih is the name of a mountain tribe, the Recreation Area has more than 700 hectares in space while being more than 1,000 meters above sea level. The year-round average temperature is approximately 18 degrees Celsius to 21 degrees Celsius. The temperature difference between day and night is marginal, making the climate cool and enjoyable. There is no need to apply for a mountain pass for this area, and all of the roads in this area have been paved.
The Tengjhih Forest is a sub-tropical temperate forest with a 403-hectare old-growth broad-leaf forest, and a 348-hectare artificial forest. It is a good place for forest bathing, appreciating forests, watching sunrises, mountain climbing, hiking, bird watching, butterfly watching, and viewing waterfalls. The Forest is also known as the Mini Sitou of the South. Its broad-leaf forest is preserved and intact, and is mainly composed of Lauraceae and Fagaceae plants. The artificial broad-leaf forest includes Chinese Coffin Trees, Taiwan Red Cypresses, Japanese Cedars, Camphor Trees, Taiwan Zelkovas, and Formosan Michelias. The Forest is definitely worth visiting as it features a complete and beautiful collection of broad-leaf trees.
