Fishery Radio Station

Taiwan is in the sub-tropical zone and surrounded by the sea. The coast of Taiwan is over 1,600 km. long. Therefore, it is great for fishery development. The government expects to continue to exploit infinite marine resources and provide quick, accurate weather forecasting for fishermen to ensure the personal and property safety of fishermen. The Political Warfare Bureau authorized the Military Intelligence Bureau to set up this station in 1980.

This radio station was founded on January 15, 1983 in Kaohsiung. It’s close to Qianzhen Fishing Port. The transmission station was built in Baisha Village, Penghu and completed in March 1983. The construction and maintenance of the headquarter were completed in June. The transmission station in Penghu started to provide the weather forecast for fishery on July 1. This was a trial broadcast. In November, the broadcasting systems in Kaohsiung and Penghu were completed and the radio station was completed. The radio station officially started broadcasting on January 7, 1984 under the command of the Taiwan government.
This radio station was under the jurisdiction of the Department of Agriculture and Forestry, Taiwan Provincial Government. It did a great job for broadcasting the latest information for farmers and fishermen in Taiwan. The existing facilities no longer could satisfy the needs of agriculture and fishery due to quick expansion of operation. The radio station requested funding from the Taiwan Provincial Government for three years, over NT$ 30 million in total. It used the fund for the Radio Building. The construction was divided into two phases in 1991 and 1992. The project began on December 20, 1990. The building was completed and commenced on April 20, 1992. The building aimed for enhancing broadcasting quality, improving the working and living environment of workers. It was hoped that this building can provide great broadcasting and helped farmers and fishermen. On July 1, 1999, the jurisdiction of the Fishery Radio Station switched to the Fisheries Agency, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan due to the organization restructuring of the Taiwan Provincial Government. Nonetheless, the Fishery Radio Station continues to provide weather forecast for fishermen.
