Shoushan Zoo

The Shoushan Zoo was built in Sizihwan, the western foothill of Shoushan on July 1, 1978 and named the “Sizihwan Zoo”. It was subordinate to the “Kaohsiung Sizihwan Area Management Office” under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government. In July 1979, the Shoushan Zoo was subordinate to the Park Management Headquarters, Construction Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government along with the Kaohsiung Sizihwan Area Management Office.
In 1983, the Park Management Headquarters was renamed the Maintenance Office and subordinated to the Public Works Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government instead. The Kaohsiung Sizihwan Area Management Office was renamed the “Wanshoushan Scenic Area Management Office” and it was under the jurisdiction of the Construction Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government. In June 1983, the expansion of the new area for Shoushan Zoo was taken over by the Construction Office, Public Works Bureau, Kaohsiung City Government for completion. It took six years from planning to completion. All facilities were completed by May 1986. Animals were moved from the old to the new site in March 1986. The zoo was reopened on June 15, 1986.
