Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum

It's located in Kaohsiung City, ROC. The ceremony of laying foundation stone was held in 2003 and the museum was officially opened on December 25, 2011. The origin of the construction: In 1998, Master Hsing Yun traveled to Bodhgaya in India for the International Triple Platform Full Ordination (a religious event for Buddhist monastics). During his visit, a Tibetan Lama, Kunga Dorje Rinpoche for appreciating Fo Guang Shan's long-term promotion of the world's Buddihist-Tibetan cultural exchange by founding the Huahan Tibetan Cultural Association, holding World Sutric and Tantric Buddhist Conference (WSTBC), establishing the BLIA World, etc, he gave Master Hsing Yun the Buddha's tooth relic that had been kept by himself for almost 30 years to be kept in the temple in Taiwan to symbolizing the everlasting presence of the Buddhadharma and enshrine the buddha's tooth relic.

The Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum is situated in the west and east and covers an area of more than 100 hectares. The construction lasted for 9 years, there were more than a hundred drafted design layout of the exterior; after multiple revision, the final construction includes "eight pagodas at the front, a large Buddha statue in the back, with Lingshan (mountain) in the south, and a Qiyuan (park) to the north" providing a magnificent layout. The main building is at the central axis, and from the east to the west, Bodhi Wisdom Concourse, eight pagodas, a photo-taking stage with a capacity of 10,000 people, Bodhi Square, main hall, and the large Buddha statue." Besides, with Lingshan (mountain) in the south and the Qiyuan (park) in the north.

  The main hall is 50 meters in height and covers an area of more than 40,000 pings. The base is tall and huge, and the hall is built in an overlay style. The base is decorated with yellow sandstone and the granite is for the exterior of the hall. The base is surrounded by the Four Noble Truths Stupas, which is carved with the pattern of kan. Inside the hall, there are Buddha statues, including Avalokiteśvara(Guanyin), the Great Wise Manjushri Bodhisattva, the King of Great Vows Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, and Samantabhadra. The interior of the museum includes one underground floor and 3 floors above the ground. Besides housing the Buddha's Tooth Relic, there's an assembly hall, Dajue Tang, with a capacity of 2,000 people, and a multi-functional exhibition space.

  There are 48 underground palaces - it's planned to recruit and collect all kinds of relics featuring history, knowledge, contemporary culture and commemorating the present. And, the exhibition of each room will be held every 100 years. With recruiting the relics from the general public, the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum will become the most important cultural landmark that keeps human's common memory of life in the history of Taiwan.

  There is a Bodhi Square ranging 100 meters in length and 100 meters in width in front of the main hall. The ground of the square is covered with rust stone and basalt. There are two side hallways along the square, each is in the length of 100 meters. The wall with the carving of 22 mendicant Buddhas and 22 verses of praising the Buddha written by Master Xing Yun. Outside the hallway, there are 18 Arhat (Luohan) round-shaped statues, including the Ten Principal Disciples and the big Arhat in " Amitabha Sutra," there're three nun statues, Daaidao, Lienhua, Yupoxianna, and 2 Arhat, Taming Dragon Lohan and Taming Tiger Lohan. Each Luohan has a vivid image, either sitting, either standing, either wearing Kasaya or wide sleeves Buddhist monk outfit The hundreds-people photo-taking stage in front of the square includes 37 steps, each is 50 meters in length and 35 meters in width, representing the 37 Daopin.

  In front of the Bodhi Square, there are eight pagodas representing the Noble Eightfold Path, which consists of eight practices, right view, right resolve, right speech, right conduct, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samadhi. The eight pagodas are built in the same form, a square-shaped 7-story pagoda with a height of 37 meters. The reinforced concrete structure and the base are covered by yellow sandstone, the exterior of the wall is Xiaolishi, the roof with Feiniaowa, the rails are made of stone.

  The center area surrounded by the eight pagodas is the Chengfo Boulevard, which is 240 meters long and 113 meters wide and covered by rust stone and basalt. Each hallway, south and north, of the Chengfo Boulevard is 254 meters long and built with Shanxi Black Stone, and it was carved with thousands of beneficiary and Master Xing Yun's Humble Table, Wise Fare featuring education and humanistic context. The Bodhi Wisdom Concourse is at the entrance of the main hall, the meaning of the name is showing courtesy to Buddhas. It's a 3-story building with one underground floor. There are service facilities including reception counter, information desk, display area, souvenir shop, restaurant.

  This large Buddha statue is behind the main hall with a total of 108 meters, the Buddha is 50 meters tall, which is the world's largest sitting Buddha made of copper. Through the "Baiwanxinjingrufashen" activity, there're millions of "The Maha Prajna Paramita Hrdaya Sutra" are housed in the Tripitaka Library to pray for world peace.

  Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum is a construction integrating ancient times and the present, domestic and abroad, traditional and contemporary culture; it features culture, education, Huijie, and Xiouchi. The establishment of the museum is to make people find their Buddha-nature through the enshrined buddha's tooth relic that represents the power and wisdom of Buddha and infuses the world with kindness and sincerity that lead a peaceful and harmonious society.
