Fengmin Radio Station

The Fengmin Broadcasting Company was created in Shanghai by founder Yuan Fengchu under the name of "Fengmin Broadcasting Society" on April 22nd of the 23rd year of the Republic of China (1934), which marked the beginning of the company’s journey to providing broadcasting services to the public. In the 26th year of the Republic of China, the "Double 7 Incident" broke out. Founder Yuan insisted on the company being part of the Republic of China and refused to register according to the regulations of the Japanese Broadcasting Studio. He relocated the company to the coal industry building within the British Concession to continue broadcasting, and changed the company’s name to "Fengmin Radio Station." The Radio Station used the concession as a protective barrier to continue promoting for the Republic of China. During that time, it happened to be State Councilor Ma Xiangbo’s 100 year birthday celebration. The Fengmin Radio Station, despite the oppression of the Japanese army, exclusively broadcast a celebration program, which united the anti-Japanese efforts of the compatriots in Shanghai. However, the Radio Station was unfortunately seized and shut down by the Japanese army. The Fengmin Radio Station didn’t begin broadcasting again in Shanghai until the Republic of China was victorious in the War against Japan during the 34th year of the Republic of China At that time, Mr. Yuan Fengchu also assisted in jointly broadcasting for Zhong Zhonghua, Ziyou, Datong, Xindu, Qingnian, and Jianshe radio stations. This was also the first time that a joint broadcast was conducted by a private radio station.
When Mr. Yuan was preparing to boost its efforts in the broadcasting industry, the Chinese Civil War broke out during the 38th year of the Republic of China. With Communist China bearing down on the Radio Station, Mr. Yuan Fengchu used emergency protocols to move all of the broadcasting equipment to Taiwan with the Republic of China government. He initially restored the “Mingpen Radio Station” in Taipei, and this was the only Taiwanese radio station to relocate to Taiwan amongst dozens of private radio stations in Shanghai, and also happened to be Taiwan’s first private radio station.
Shortly after arriving in Taiwan, the forward-looking Mr. Yuan Fengchu noticed that Southern Taiwan’s industry and commerce was on the rise, and that the city of Kaohsiung didn’t have a private radio station. On October 16th in the 39th year of the Republic of China (1950), Mr. Yuan relocated and operated Fengmin Radio Station in Kaohsiung. As a trailblazer of Kaohsiung’s radio broadcasting industry, he used two bamboo sticks as antennas and took up managing the radio station as he fought hard to gradually establish the foundations of the Fengmin Radio Station. As the Radio Station broadcast programs that tracked the progress of the society, the Radio Station’s audience grew larger and larger. A second broadcast station was established on January 18th in the 48th year of the Republic of China to expand its businesses to serve the public. On February 27th of the 55th year of the Republic of China, the Fengmin Building on Jiuru 2nd Road in Kaohsiung City was completed just in time to cope with the booming and developing broadcasting Industry. The 990 m2 area four-story building was the largest broadcasting building in Taiwan at that time. On November 9th during the 57th year of the Republic of China, the company responded to the government's call for "Establish relay stations in remote areas," and established the first privately-owned Penghu Relay Station in Taiwan. Since then, 23 relay stations have been established in Taiwan. On December 1st of the same year, the rapid development of the industrial and commercial enterprises saw an increase in nighttime workers, and the Radio Station began broadcasting 24 hours a day. Fengmin was also Taiwan’s first private radio station to broadcast 24 hours a day.
