85 Sky Tower Rooftop

Standing tall by Kaohsiung Harbor is the Kaohsiung 85 Sky Tower, which is not only Kaohsiung’s key landmark, it is also the world’s 28th tallest skyscraper. Standing as tall as 347.5 meters or 378 meters including the antenna, with a total of 85 floors above ground, 5 levels underground, the building was completed in 1997. If ranked by the highest floor level in use (actual building height not including antenna), Kaohsiung’s 85 Sky Tower is the 27th tallest in the world (as of October 2017). When the 85 Sky Tower was first completed, it had been the tallest building in Taiwan up until it was surpassed by Taipei 101.

The building owns a special penetrating design; the left and the right buildings combine into one single tower from 35th floor and above, up till through the pointed roof at the 85th floor. A large hollow space is thus created below the central tower. The building exterior shows exactly the name of the situated city: “高” (as the “Kao” in Kaohsiung).
On the other hand, Kaohsiung’s 85 Sky Tower is also the first skyscraper in Taiwan that introduces the wind-resistant damper. The building is also equipped with more than 92elevators and escalators. The fastest elevator has a speed of 750 meters per minute and is able to go up 77 floors within 45 seconds.
The 74th floor is an observation deck exclusively designed for visitors, where they could look over the Kaohsiung Harbor, Taiwan Strait, Shoushan, and Kaohsiung’s city view. When the visibility is clear, visitors could also see North Dawu Mountain in Pingtung; and when the visibility is the best during summer, visitors could even look far into the distance and spot Xiaoliuqiu over the ocean. Inside the building, there are exhibitions of many photos related to Kaohsiung City, display cabinets showing objects on sale, and a souvenir area. Visitors can also take a break at the sky view café and appreciate the beautiful sceneries.
